Understanding Your NDIS Funding for Behaviour Support

Not sure which NDIS funding type you have, or whether it covers behaviour support? We explain it clearly — so you can access the help you need, without the confusion.

Ask Us About Your Funding

Where Does Behaviour Support Sit in Your NDIS Plan?

Behaviour Support is funded under Capacity Building Supports — Improved Daily Living (Support Category 15). This is separate from your Core Supports and Support Coordination — it’s specifically for therapeutic and specialist services.

The good news: if you have Improved Daily Living funds in your NDIS plan, you can use them for Behaviour Support with Brave Mental Health. We accept all funding management types.

How Is Your NDIS Plan Managed?

There are three ways your NDIS plan can be managed — and we work with all of them.

📋

Plan Managed

A registered Plan Manager handles your NDIS funding. They pay your service providers on your behalf, using money from your NDIS plan.

If you’re plan managed, here’s how it works with us:

  • You give us your Plan Manager’s details when you sign up
  • We send invoices directly to your Plan Manager
  • You never need to pay anything out of pocket
  • Your Plan Manager keeps track of your budget

Best for: Families who want professional help managing their funds without the complexity of self-managing.

Self Managed

You manage your own NDIS funds directly. You have the most flexibility — you can choose any provider, including non-registered ones.

If you’re self-managed, here’s how it works:

  • We send you an invoice after each session
  • You pay us, then claim reimbursement through the NDIS myplace portal or app
  • You have full control over how your funds are used
  • You can use providers who charge below or at NDIS rates

Best for: People who want maximum control and flexibility over their supports and how they spend their NDIS budget.

🏢

Agency Managed (NDIA Managed)

The NDIS (NDIA) manages your funding. Agency-managed participants generally need to use providers who can claim directly through the NDIS portal. Brave Mental Health is led by a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner; contact us first so we can confirm the right pathway for your situation.

If you’re agency managed, contact us before booking so we can confirm the right pathway for your situation:

  • We can help you understand whether your plan can be used for behaviour support
  • We can discuss plan-managed or self-managed options if they apply to you
  • We can suggest next steps if your funding requires direct NDIA portal claiming

Best for: People who want the simplest possible experience — the NDIS handles everything in the background.

NDIS Early Childhood Funding (Under 7)

The NDIS Early Childhood Approach provides support for children under 7 who have a developmental delay or disability — often without needing a formal diagnosis.

This is one of the most important and underused funding pathways in the NDIS. Early intervention during the critical developmental years (0–7) can dramatically change a child’s trajectory.

What Early Childhood funding can cover:

  • Behaviour Support assessment and planning
  • Early intervention therapy (speech, OT, psychology, behaviour)
  • Parent and carer coaching
  • Strategies for home, childcare, and kindergarten
You do NOT need a diagnosis to start.

If your child is under 7 and you’ve noticed developmental concerns — communication, behaviour, social development — contact the NDIS Early Childhood partner in your area. They can help you access funding quickly. Brave Mental Health can guide you through this process.

Why Early Intervention Matters

Early intervention means providing support as early as possible after a developmental concern or diagnosis is identified. The research is clear: the earlier support starts, the better the outcomes.

For children with autism, ADHD, or developmental delays, early behaviour support can:

📈

Accelerate developmental milestones

👨‍👩‍👧

Reduce family stress and burnout

🎓

Improve school readiness and inclusion

🌱

Build lifelong communication & social skills

If you’re waiting for a diagnosis or an NDIS plan — don’t wait to reach out. There are often ways to access support while the formal process is underway. Talk to us today.
