As a Support Coordinator, you play a critical role in connecting participants with the right supports. This guide covers the key things you need to know about behaviour support referrals and working with a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner.
When Should You Refer to a Behaviour Support Practitioner?
- A participant is struggling with behaviours of concern affecting daily functioning or safety
- A provider is using or considering a regulated restrictive practice — a BSP is legally required before implementation
- A participant is at risk of losing accommodation or day program placement due to behaviour
- Previous strategies have not produced lasting change
- A participant is transitioning between settings
What Funding Is Used?
Behaviour support is funded from Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living (CB Daily Activities). Brave Mental Health supports plan-managed and self-managed participants.
Regulatory Requirements
Under the NDIS (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support) Rules 2018, any provider implementing a regulated restrictive practice must have a current BSP developed by a registered practitioner, and must report usage to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
